Types of ESA Lesson Formats.

Recently I have given some examples of the ESA lesson format with a description and example of ENGAGE, STUDY and ACTIVATE phase of this format of English language lesson plans.

Now that you understand the three elements of an ESA lesson I would like to briefly discuss different uses of this format.

Basically there are three types of ESA format you might try to use, these are:

  1. Straight Arrow which consists of the teacher following the sequence Engage, Study and Activate. This is the best format for the teacher who knows the students needs. Allowing the teacher to take the students to a logical point where they can use the language.
  2. Patchwork which might be formatted Engage, Activate, Activate, Study, Activate, Engage, Study and Activate. This type of lesson format is very useful for more complex issues, which can be broken down into sections before bringing it all together at the end.
  3. Boomerang is another possible lesson format using ESA. Here Engage is followed by Activate, Study and Activate. Using this format might present problems for the teacher in that they could be unsure of the needs of the students in the Study phase.

Flexibility as a English language teacher is most important, using different ESA lesson formats can provide this while still working within lesson aims and objectives.
